Thousands of Tamil Canadians gathered at Albert Campbell Square in Scarborough, Toronto, to mark Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day on May 18, honoring the memory of the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians who lost their lives during the final stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. The large scale public gathering brought together Tamil diaspora families, youth, political leaders, activists, and community organizations in a solemn display of remembrance, unity, and advocacy for justice. Many attendees carried flags, flowers, and signs calling for accountability and international recognition of the atrocities committed against Tamils in Sri Lanka. The event also served as a moment for younger generations born and raised in Canada to reconnect with their history and heritage.

This year’s event in Toronto saw an especially strong turnout from Tamil youth, many of whom wore black clothing as a symbol of mourning and solidarity. A group of youth carrying the Tamil Eelam national flag gathered together to pay tribute to the civilians who lost their lives in Mullivaikkal. Throughout the evening, attendees observed moments of silence, offered floral tributes, and listened to speeches centered on justice, remembrance, and human rights. The atmosphere reflected both grief and resilience, as community members united to ensure that the memories of those who died would never be forgotten.

Commemorative speeches were delivered before a massive crowd gathered at the square, with many Canadian political representatives, human rights advocates, and Tamil community leaders taking part in the program. Speakers emphasized the need for continued international accountability and called for justice for the Tamil people of Eelam. Several speakers also highlighted the importance of educating younger generations about the events of 2009 and preserving the historical memory of Mullivaikkal. The gathering demonstrated the continued strength and unity of the Tamil Canadian community, particularly among second generation youth who have increasingly taken active roles in advocacy and remembrance efforts.

Canada has become one of the leading countries recognizing the significance of May 18 for the Tamil community. In 2022, the Canadian House of Commons officially recognized May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. In Ontario, the Tamil Genocide Education Week Act, also known as Bill 104, proclaims the seven day period ending on May 18 each year as Tamil Genocide Education Week. The legislation encourages Ontarians to educate themselves about the Tamil genocide and other genocides throughout history. These recognitions are viewed by many Tamil Canadians as important steps toward acknowledgment, awareness, and justice.

Over the past sixteen years, Tamil Canadians and advocacy organizations across the country have continued to organize remembrance events, educational campaigns, and calls for accountability regarding the events that took place in Sri Lanka. Albert Campbell Square has become one of the most recognized locations in Canada for these commemorations, drawing thousands of attendees annually. Community members say the event is not only about remembering the past, but also about ensuring that future generations continue to speak out against injustice and human rights violations. As candles were lit and tributes were offered throughout the evening, the message shared by the crowd remained clear: remembrance, justice, and accountability must continue to be pursued for the Tamil people.
