Thousands of Tamil Canadians gathered at Albert Campbell Square in Scarborough, Toronto, to mark Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day on May 18, honoring the memory of the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians who lost their lives during the final stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. The legislation encourages Ontarians to educate themselves about the Tamil genocide and other genocides throughout history. These recognitions are viewed by many Tamil Canadians as important steps toward acknowledgment, awareness, and justice.
